Andrew Milne led a tutorial on buoyancy and density with the youth in the classroom. They split into teams and designed hot air balloons using plastic bags and birthday candles. They evaluated their constructions using scales and performed test flights indoors.
Another wacky experiment included go pros, helium balloons and Mike Maryniuk’s fishing rod. The students were amazed at the results! They calculated how many party balloons we would need to lift one of their iPods into the air. We filled 24 balloons and tied them all together with messages of hope and human rights suspended below. Mike used the fishing rod to retrieve the balloons after each flight.
Local Thompson visual artist Jasyn Lucas, designer of the Digital Lodge logo, guided the students in painting the logo larger than life on the side of Juniper School. The students took initiative in documenting the process.
The final class documentary film is a montage of the wonderful experiments the students completed over the course of the year.
Jim Sanders joined the students on their Winter camping trip to Liz Lake where they learned how to bake bannock, trap wildlife, and build a quinzee. The trip proved to be a powerful bonding experience for all.
Mike Maryniuk taught the basics of animation by using classic claymation techniques. Here are some of the results.
During a fun blue screen and compositing workshop with Mike Maryniuk, the students came up with this gem.
